Night Dancer

Hi all. A few items of business. Firstly, Adam & The Amethysts will be playing Pop Montreal this year, but the details are still being hashed out. I’ll keep you posted. I can say that one of the shows will be later in the evening on Sept 29th.

Another thing, I posted a new song from the upcoming record on Myspace the other day that you can listen to. It’s called “Adam Called Me Over Christmas” and is kinda sad. Sorry to post a sad one.

carly waito

I’d say the record is about 95% finished. I really thought that it would be done before the end of August, but it’s not, and such is life. I always end up accidentally writing new songs while recording the other ones. It should be finished in the next two weeks or so, but who knows when or how it will be released. I guess that depends on a lot of things.

One thing you can count on, though, is that I will be posting more new songs soon for download. Another thing I can tell you about the record is that I will be collaborating with my amazing sister Carly on the artwork. Carly, if you’re reading this, we need to get on this ;)

Also, I think it is going to be called Primrose & Pinecones and will contain about 11 or 12  tracks. Excitement and uncertainty abounds!

J’ai mal à la gorge

Okay, so I don’t have diphtheria, but I’m sick and my throat is in a horrible state. I’ve been taking every crazy remedy that any random person tells me to try, with the hopes that one of them will make my voice healthy enough to sing like an angel this Tuesday night in Guelph, the first show of our mini-tour with Land of Talk. Mostly I’ve been drinking a lot of concentrated hot ginger and lemon brew. And no alcohol, even though this was the first real warm spring-like weekend of the year and all of my friends are drinking beer in the park, on patios, on my balcony… I’m  so jealous.

Wish me luck.

Happy Anniversary You’ve Changed Records! iTunes Sale!

You’ve Changed Records is celebrating their anniversary this month by putting all their records on sale for only $7.99 on iTunes. That includes 2008′s Amethyst Amulet by Adam & The Amethysts. The sale is running from March 8th to March 22nd. Get them while they’re cheap! And so many good records other than mine are on this lovely little label, like Baby Eagle, Attack in Black, Shotgun Jimmie, The Luyas…

And, if you have yet to hear the latest You’ve Changed release, Daniel, Fred, and Julie–featuring some of the leading lights of Canadian indie rock and of my heart–do so now. More info here. It’s really magical; you can hear it for yourself:

Now buy it, silly!

k, that’s all for now.

ALL CAPS! Re-Cap: Toronto Island was Rather Magical

Toronto Island

I have to say, I was surprised this weekend with just how enjoyable and whimsical the ALL CAPS! Island Show was. Rebecca and I had a good set. The crowd was receptive and pleasant and there were a number of Thunder Bay ex-pats in the crowd which made it special for me.

The rest of the day was also really great. This was my first time on Toronto Island, and I didn’t realize how lovely the place was. We took a walk on the beach and I found a number of treasures, including bones, feathers, rocks, a bottle cap, shells, and fragments of old dishes.

Treasures

The most exciting finds were the two shards of old ceramic plates that had been worn over time like smooth beach rocks, but still had their stamps on them. The one with the cross printed on it was from the children’s hospital. Click here to see my excavated loot up close.

The show itself took place inside the Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts, a 100-year-old natural sciences school that had been rescued from demolition by an urban development organization called Artscape and turned into artist residences and studios (this was a fundraiser for them). As a side note, my friend Yuula Benivolski was doing some rad stuff there up until just recently. Check out her site to see footage of her crazy fire rituals on the beach and other artful endeavors. To get a sense of how beautiful the island is, check out Yuula’s Flickr page.

The atmosphere was very summer-campy, which I loved. There was a big warm fireplace in the big cafeteria-like room in which we performed. Unfortunately I didn’t take any photos, so you’ll have to take my word for it. My sister was there and took some, so I’ll try to post them when I get my hands on them.

One highlight was seeing Snowblink perform. I had never heard them before and they were quite enjoyable. We picked up their record “Long Live,” and it’s quite nice.

Near the old school was a lighthouse. Here’s a video I took of noisy art band Ghostlight playing there.

Twas an all-around great event. Ryan, Jonny, and co. who put on this show should be very proud!
